What Are the Causes of Bad Breath?
In some cases, bad breath is just temporary while in other cases, bad breath is actually a symptom of a larger issue.
Types of food that cause bad breath
There are certain types of food that have strong odors and can leave your mouth smelling bad. These include food which contain garlic and onions. The smell can continue to persist hours after eating. The unpleasant smell will only go away once your body has totally eliminated the food that you ate. In the meantime, you can use products like mouthwash to mask the bad odor.
Poor dental hygiene
Daily brushing and flossing can remove food particles from your mouth. When these particles are left in your mouth, your teeth, gums, and tongue can become vulnerable to bacterial growth. The bacteria, in turn, can produce a foul smell in your mouth.
Health conditions
Sometimes, bad breath can indicate that you are suffering from a health condition. These conditions may include gum disease, dry mouth or xerostomia, pneumonia, bronchitis, sinus infection, diabetes, acid reflux, or liver or kidney problems.
Preventing bad breath
With bad breath, you do not have to play the hapless victim. In fact, there are a few things that you can do to minimize, if not totally prevent, this embarrassing problem.
- Practice good oral hygiene
Proper and regular brushing and flossing can help eliminate food particles and plaque from your mouth. Brush your teeth after every meal and replace your toothbrush every two or three months. You can rinse your mouth using an antibacterial mouthwash.
- Visit your dentist at least twice a year
Your dentist can diagnose and treat dental issues like gum disease which may contribute to bad breath. Ideally, you should visit your dentist at least twice a year. Your dentist may also refer you to a specialist if the cause of your bad breath is a medical condition.
- Consider kicking your tobacco habit
If you smoke or chew tobacco products, you are more prone to bad breath. Consider stopping your bad habit to eliminate bad breath and improve your overall health.
- Keep yourself hydrated
- Water helps keep your mouth moist and helps prevent bad breath. Apart from water, there are a few products like sugarless gums and candies which facilitate the production of saliva.
- Keep a food diary
- Finally, a food diary will help you determine which types of food may be causing your bad breath.
